Congratulations Dad!! My dad completed the Hustle Up the Hancock run today, climbing 96 flights of stairs in 22 minutes!! Pat Moon surprised him by greeting him at the top of the tower before he flew out to Anchorage this evening. Ed and the crew are in Wasilla, dogs all traveled well and pre-race events will be getting uderway soon.

The travelers are doing great along the Alaskan Highway. Ed called today from Haines Junction. They had a great training run yesterday in Whitehorse, and are still ahead of schedule. He has always wanted to do a training run somewhere along the way so the dogs can have a chance to stretch their legs, but it always seems like either truck trouble or bad weather has prohibited it. They are still on target to be in Wasilla by tomorrow (Sunday) night and make it to the EKG's on Monday. It's been warmer on their drive than here. It was 46 degrees yesterday when Ed called from Watson Lake!
We are having fun here at home with tours and puppies. Sam and Maliko are at Boyne this weekend. Krister, Vanessa and I are keeping the tour guests entertained here. We took a break from work to walk 17 dogs and puppies to the sledding hill on Friday. I think that is our kennel free-running record! It was a blast. I was official photographer (along with Yooper and Rosebud--see self portrait), Krister and Vanessa were the sledders, and the puppies basically tried to stay out of the way. I've decided to become a "responsible mother" and stay off the sledding hill for a while, although I'm not sure it was too much safer to be at the bottom of the hill with the camera!

The Iditarod teams are off to Alaska! Ed, Ryne and Cliff left here early Wednesday morning with Pat's Iditarod team. In the truck headed north are: Gus, Max, Prancer, Kar, Jasper, Hera, Caullie, Juneau, Arlo, Jester, Ladybird, Rhu, Banjo, Superior, Martha, Sprout, Luke, and Lumber. Banjo and Superior are going along as alternates for either Pat or Trent's teams. Pat will eave Chicago on Sunday to fly up and meet up with the team. He's supposed to be home getting lots of sleep before the big race! Trent and his team team flew up on Tuesday. On the Iditarod flight with hime are: Bonfire, Hoover, Onyx, Alaska, Judge, Fiddle, Uke, Crazy, Flynt, Wallace, Meghan, Cindy, Jekyl, Tuuli, Cupid, and Krister. The rest of us here at home are entertaining lots of tour guests, puppies, and each other! We are still in the midst of a very busy touring season, still have great snow on the trails, and the dogs are loving all the attention!

I apologize for the poor UP 200 coverage...between being back and forth following the race and keeping up on chores here, I neglected my computer duties! Congratulations to Pat, Ryne and Sam for their finishes. It was a tough race with such warm weather, but the dogs overall fared very well and are bouncing around in the sunshine today. A big thanks again to Jim Levine, Brian Wisebaum, Mike Varley, Krister Raasoch, and Mike Olson for all their handling help. They covered everything from digging trenches in Grand Marais and driving the dog truck and trailer, to entertaining the crowds and caring for the dogs. It made for a very easy race for the mushers.
The crew arrived home yesterday afternoon, did a mad un-packing of gear, and are now re-packing for the trip to Alaska. Ed, Cliff Henning, and Ryne are planning to leave this evening for the long drive north with Pat's team. Pat is out on a couple of short runs with his final "18" today, and will help load and then return to Chicago to fly to Alaska on Sunday. Through out the season he has had "dog parties" in his cabin with 10-12 of his "ladies" so I went out last night for the final party. As you can see, it was quite the bash.

The race is on! Pat, Ryne and Sam made it successfully out of the starting chute for the UP 200 last night. Pat had an executive from AT&T in his sled who rode the first 5 miles of the race. I was at the start to see Pat take off, and then headed with Lynne to the "sled drop" to give Pat his race sled and pick up the larger touring sled. We had great help from the spectator crew to load and unload the sled. We watched Sam and Ryne come through, and then headed home to sleep here. We brought a few dogs back that were in Montana but who are not running this race (Ero, Reboom, Coach, and Ayn). We will head out soon to Grand Marais to be part of the party there. Ed and his all star handling crew went to Grand Marais last night to await the musher's arrival today (expected around noon). Brian Wisebaum, Mike Varley, Mike Olson (Ryne's dad), Krister, Jim Levline are all "helping" Ed handle for three mushers who really don't need any help at all. They were already recruiting people for card games last night and stopped in Munising at the Shark Bay Bar for "appetizers". Michele Seng, Lynne Witte, and my parents are here at the house with me to help with dog chores. I'll give another update after our visit in Grand Marais this afternoon.

We are off to the races again. Yes, Ryne did finish the Race to the Sky, I realized that Ed never sent a final update after her 5th place finish. They will be pulling into Marquette just in time for the musher meeting today. Thankfully, she finished a bit early, they had great roads, and the dogs are all doing well. They did make a final dog switch with Trent, and left Onyx, Coach and Alaska in exchange for Sheep, Banjo and Buckwheat. I'm sure Ed and Ryne are suffering from withdrawl as Alaska is Ryne's favorite dog in the kennel, and Onyx and Coach have been Ed's main men for the past two Iditarods.
The UP 200 mushers and teams are ready, so cheer loud this weekend. The race starts on Friday night. Be sure to sign up for the UP 200 Fantasy Mushing game and play along...check it out at:

02/16/2010 8:30 a.m Ryne is off for the finish line! She left the last checkpoint at 6:15 this morning in fifth place with 9 dogs more than ready to go. Her team: Onyx-Gus (in lead), Alaska-Ayn,Chong, Reboom-Cupid, Gimli-Clark
After much discussion, we decided to drop Coach and Luther. Both of them are OK to run but woke up somewhat stiff and Ryne really does not want to have to bag a dog on this 72 mile leg. If all goes well, I expect them to finish about 3:15 this afternoon.Sorry I do not have any pictures of the dogs and musher from this morning but I promised Ryne that I would give her a break from me being the annoying media. I did acquire a picture taken yesterday afternoon from Randy who is one of the wonderful people that are responsible for putting this race on. He was at the unassisted Owl Creek checkpoint and snapped this photo of the team taking a siesta.

02/15/2010 Noonish: Ryne and her four legged friends had a nice run from the Whitetail Ranch to the Seeley Lake Checkpoint early this morning. It never really cooled off last night but at least it was not sunny. All 11 dogs looked happy upon arrival, ate their food, and slept REALLY well. Ryne, as a matter of fact, did the same. I was the annoying paparazzi this morning and caught a picture of her as she emerged from her slumber in the truck bunkbed. Ryne has been very disciplined with her sleep but we have intentionally not been staying long at checkpoints in order to avoid running the dogs through the heat of the day. So far Ryne was able to sleep about 1 hour and 15 minutes at the Whitetail and about 2 and a half hours here at Seeley Lake. She hit the trail all smiles at about 9:15 am this morning with all eleven dogs more than ready to go. Her team on the trail right now is
Gus-Chong (in lead), Coach-Clark, Alaska-AynGimli, Luther-Reboom, Cupid-Onyx
She is currently on her way to the unassisted checkpoint of Owl Creek where she will probably stay about 4-6 hours and then return to Seeley Lake Checkpoint for a mandatory 6 hour rest. The unassisted part of the Owl Creek is not really that big of a deal as I have made Ryne do most of the checkpoint routine by herself at all of the stops in order to see how ready she will be to run a more work intensive race like the Iditarod. In addition, she is using this race as an Iditarod qualifier and therefore needs to prove herself to the Race Marshall and Head Veterinarian.
Other pictures:
Gimli and Clark saying, “Sorry Ed you don't get to go. Please do not hold it against us but Ryne weighs in 60 pounds lighter and tells better jokes.”

I think I found somebody that likes to race almost as much as I do. Ryne came into the Whitetail Checkpoint all smiles and said today's run was even better than yesterdays! Once I saw that the dogs looked great and everybody was devouring their meal, I recommended that they rest only four hours and get back out on the trail while it is a little cooler during the night. Ryne agreed to the plan so we grabbed a quick bite to eat and ate it outside in our t-shirts (even though it was dark it was still right around freezing) while the dogs slept. Then Ryne slept in the truck for about an hour and a half, got up, bootied the dogs, and she was off again. We are expecting the next leg to take about 6-7 hours. So hopefully by the time most of you have crawled out of your bed and read this, Ryne and her team will be resting in Seeley Lake.

02/14/2010 5:40 p.m.
The start today went smooth and not much to report at this time from Montana. I am waiting at the first checkpoint of the race, the Whitetail Ranch. They have spoiled us here with food, drink, and a lot of smiles. The checkpoint is laid out in Iditarod fashion with the dog teams scheduled to be lined up in a big field side by side. This will be great training for Ryne as the set up is somewhat different than what we experience in the Midwest. The Race to the Sky website has the GPS trackers working perfectly which has been a blast for us handlers to watch. The run times are pretty slow due to the extremely warm and sunny weather. The report is the weather is somewhat cooler in Huckleberry Pass (where Ryne is right now according to the GPS) so let's hope the dogs are feeling more comfortable. Our plan is to rest the dogs between 4 and 7 hours and then Ryne and her canine crew will be off to Seeley Lake Checkpoint.
For those wondering, Ryne did start the race with 11 dogs, not the maximum of 12. We brought out 13 to Montana but Erie is resting for the UP 200 with a mild wrist injury and Eros is probably out for the season with a muscle pull in his rear left leg.

Happy 4th Birthday to the Valentine Puppies..Cupid, Ero, Hera, and Val!
Update from Ed:
"What a day for a daydream. What a day for a daydreamin' boy." John Sebastion and the Luvin' Spoonful
This will be a brief summery of the first day events of The Race to the Sky because it is already after midnight and I need to get some sleep.
Three wonderful things not necessarily in order of significance:
1- 35 degree sunshine and bootieing dogs in comfort
2- Ryne saying at today's finish line, "That had to be the nicest day of dog running I have had yet."
3- One of the Veterinarians making a special trip to our truck at the finish line and commenting, "That is the happiest dog team I have seen!"
The dogs looked AWESOME (and it was a number 5 Maliko)!!! Ryne is sooooo happy with her run. And I think this handling gig is OK. Racing is a lot more fun though!
Notes on the race:
1- Awesome (another number 5 Maliko) people volunteering and putting this race on.
2- The tracker system on the race website had some glitches today but people are working hard on it to have it ready soon.
3- Race officials said today's leg was the hardest one. The next runs are not easy by any means but it is a happy Nature's Kennel Western Division right now. Race website is

Tasha's Notes from the Curtis Winter Carnival...We had a GREAT time!! Pat and Sam ran dogs for about 6 hours straight, giving nearly 20 rides each. Vanessa was kept busy booking rides and answering every possible question about sled dogs. A huge thanks goes to Jim Levline for transporting our trailer full of dogs to and from the festival (since Ed has the white pick-up and the old dog truck is at Boyne) and to Jon Brown for helping managing the crowd and dog teams! We ran the dogs on a nice loop out on the ice, where there was 18 inches of ice and just enough snow to add cushion to the trail. We made a trail of straw bales for the dogs to follow and they did great. It was good Iditarod training for Pat's team as they don't get too much ice/open lake training. Lady Bird was the leader of the day doing a fabulous job gettting the team turned around even though they came back to the truck each time. Pat and Sam had fun in the kid's ice fishing coop at the end of the day, trying their best to catch a fish for Hera's birthday. Pat made the kid next to him (who caught three fish) feel so sorry for him that he got a pity fish from a 10 year old. Hera didn't complain this morning when she got her fish head treat!!

"That day, for no particular reason, I decided to go for a little run." Forest Gump
What a great pre-race day! The Race to the Sky is celebrating its 25th anniversary and had a special Vet check location on the front lawn of the Montana Capitol Building. Very classy!!! The Vet check was followed by a well organized musher meeting with tons of trail information. Then this evening we had a musher dinner/bib draw. It was a delicious meal at the Elks where they fed us pasties! I thought they were only found in the UP but it turns out they are also part of the extremely friendly Montana culture. As great as everything was, I have to admit that a highlight for me is visiting with musher friends that I only get to see once or twice a year. And the very best part of the day was a surprise visit from Kim and Bryan Busch! Thank you Kim and Bryan, sorry I could not visit longer tonight but I hope you now that you made my day!!!
Ryne is doing amazingly well. She still seems calm and is focused on the race and has been a wonderful traveling companion. There can be a lot of distractions before a race and I have not seen the deer in the headlights look from her yet. She starts Saturday with Bib #11 and on Sunday she has a passenger in her sled bag for the first 4 miles. John Stewart, a rookie this year in the Iditarod, bid $130 to be blessed with Ryne's presence for that brief time. Thanks John for the donation to the race.
The format of this race is a little different than others. On Saturday the teams run an estimated 60 miles and then the dogs are boxed overnight and the race relocates to Lincoln, Montana. Then on Sunday the teams restart out of Lincoln for a continues format with four checkpoints. The trail out of Lincoln seems to be in good shape even with the warm weather. The trail for the Saturday leg has been questioned and the race organization sent their trail crew out today to check things out. There is another Musher's meeting in the morning to discuss any possible changes in Saturday's run. Whatever they decide, it works for us. Ryne and I just want to get the dogs out of the truck and doing what they love, RUNNING!
Meanwhile...notes from the real home on the range. We are headed to the Curtis Winter Carnival today to give dog sled rides. It will be something new for all of us, so Pat, Sam, Vanessa and I have no idea what to expect today! We had hoped to use a nearby trail for the rides, but there is so little snow down there (as opposed to our house which is only 35 miles away) that we have to give rides on the big lake. It will be great Iditarod training for Pat's dogs, but may be a lot of work for us to get the teams stopped and turned around. Vanessa and I celebrated an early Valentine's Day last night. We went to the "Un-Valentine" concert at the Erickson Center in Curtis. Jamie Sue Seal, a friend of ours, owns Smokin' Sled Dog Records and performed songs of heartache, heartbreak and betrayl with three of her cover artists. It was actually quite entertaining and we laughed pretty hard. It wad great to have a night out on the town!

"It's times like these, I'm feeling happy. It's times like these, I'm feeling free. It's times like these, I feel alive." Times Like These, Hot Strings
News from Montana is...... it is HOT out here! Yesterday was light jacket weather and the forecast for today is, "a chance of rain and snow in the afternoon. Highs 35 to 40. Southwest winds 10 to 20 mph with gusts to 30 mph." The race does not start until tomorrow but it does not look like it will cool down anytime soon. It sounds like a great race to be a handler! No bootieing in 30 below this week.
We have pre-race Vet checks today at noon on the steps of the Capitol Building. How cool is that? (I will try and get a picture of the Governor taking a dogs temperature.) After that we have a musher meeting, we do not know when or where yet but I am sure they will tell us at the Vet check. The Musher Dinner starts tonight at 6 p.m. followed by a great nights sleep before race day.
I had mentioned in my last writing that we were destined for a hotel on Wednesday night. Well those plans changed. We slept in the truck again. Don't feel too sorry for us though, as we drove up to a seasonal mountain campground, staked the dogs out on straw, built a fire, ate some chocolate, and had a time like that! The alarm clock rang about 7 a.m. when Alaska and Ayn crawled out of Ryne's sleeping bag and started scratching on the truck door to go outside. In the morning we then had another near perfect training run. About halfway into the run we ran into another musher, John Barron, who was out on a training run as well. He welcomed us to his great state, wished Ryne good luck in her big race, and was off.
The pictures below:
"Dogs who hate Ford trucks"- Our wonderful Ford truck took all day to fix (939 dollars worth). It was fairly warm in the shop so we took the 8 big boys out of the dog truck and played with them behind the dealership. The people at the dealership were very cooperative and got a kick out of our posse.
"Lewis and Clark"- Driving down the interstate yesterday morning we spotted "a cave" up on the mountain side and had to explore. After a quick exit and a brief climb, we found that our bottomless pit of surprises would probably not make the Planet Earth series. Fun was to be had though.
"Poster Boy"- Coach is the white dog showing off his happy face after a big climb.
"Times Like These"- On the Thursday run we hooked up the full race team and ran tandem sleds. Tandem sleds allowed me to get some great pictures while Ryne did all the "work" of running the team. It was 35 degrees with no wind and snow-globe snow falling for most of the run.

"Step from the road to the sea to the sky" Snow, Red Hot Chilly Peppers
Hello from Montana while waiting for the Race to the Sky!
Ryne, Erie, Reboom, Luther, Gus, Chong, Ero, Coach, Gimli, Clark, Cupid, Onyx, Alaska, and Ayn are currently waiting in a Ford repair shop getting our never dependable Ford truck fixed again. All I can say is that I am happy our dogs are more dependable than the Ford 6L deisel engine. Not to sound too negative though, the trip has been wonderful! We arrived in one piece and had a FANTASTIC training run in the mountains yesterday evening. The dogs were just stroking and climbed and climbed and climbed with ease. Erie's mild wrist injury was slightly aggravated and he will sit out this race but should be more than ready for the UP 200. I am sure that he will be bummed about not running but once I get Ryne out on the trail on Saturday, Erie is going to be my co-pilot in the front seat of the truck. He is not the best map reader but I am sure that he will help me eat dorito's and maybe even sip some diet coke.
We posted some pictures and hope you enjoy. Today, when we depart with a smoother running truck, we are going to try and find a sunny spot to let the dogs free run and sunbathe. If all goes well, we will get some good mountain pics and send them your way. Tonight Ryne is meeting up with old friends for a pre-birthday dinner in Helena and then hopefully another good nights sleep. Last night was in a Walmart parking lot, but tonight we will splurge for actual beds and a heated room. Then tomorrow another training run and going over equipment, mandatory gear, race plan, etc.
For all of you planning to follow the race on-line, please do not get too disappointed. Ryne will be taking extra rest and not racing to win. Some of the dogs in her team will be running the UP 200 two days after the 350 mile Race to the Sky and then leaving for the Iditarod two days after the UP 200. Busy, busy, but in a very fun way!
By the way, it is Ryne's (21st) birthday on the 11th.
Missing all of you in Michigan, (especially Marty our truck mechanic).
Note: Meanwhile back at the real ranch...Momo and pregnant Tasha look quite nice together napping!

Ok, if you blink around here, plans change so fast that no one can keep up. So, for those of you (and us) who need an update on the winter's events here we go: Ed and Ryne left yesterday for the Race to the Sky in Montana. Ryne had hoped to run the Beargrease Marathon this year as a 300-mile qualifier for the 2011 Iditarod, but the race was full and she was unable to sweet talk her way into it! The plan is to run the race, then drive through the night back to Michigan on Wednesday to make it to Marquette in time for the UP 200 banquet on Thursday night. I think she's going to have a lesson in not only racing but sleep deprivation as well. Since Ed and Ryne's depature leaves us a bit short handed with help, Krister, yes, you read correctly, KRISTER, will be here on Thursday to help with tours. I think he was really beginning to msis us, and acutally seem happy when I called him to come out for a few weeks. He'll bring Hairy Potter and Art (his Nature's Kennel house dogs) along so they can visit all their old friends. He'll also help handle for Pat for the UP 200, and then hopefully stay for a few more days after the crew leaves for Alaska. Ed, Ryne, and Cliff Henning will leave around February 23rd to drive Pat's team to Alaska for the Iditarod. Rumor has it that Trent has secured the dream sponsor of a lifetime and will have his team flown to Alaska. Those young dogs of our will never be the same again after they are treated so well. Cliff, Ed and Ryne will then all fly back to Michigan after the Iditarod gets underway. The only things that haven't changed is that Momo and I seem to be spending more and more time on the couch together and this baby is still coming in March, hopefully with a husband who makes it home from Alaska in time!

(As Vanessa): Yesterday was Iditarod packing day! Pat got all his drop bags packed and dropped off at the IGA in Newberry to be frozen. Ed, Ryne, Michele, Tasha, and I all helped him pack and Tasha Canine was the inspector. With all of us helping things went pretty quickly and smoothly, and Pat is happy not to have to see those drop bags again until all the various checkpoints at the Iditarod!
It was such nice weather yesterday and put all of us in a good mood...until somehow things got turned around and it all of a sudden became "pick on Vanessa" day! Tasha was the main culprit and the others joined in happily, all to the glee of Pat Moon! Oh, but I took it gracefully and just turned the other cheek. :-) Anything for the entertainment of the NK staff!
Michele has been up, visiting since last week and is staying for her birthday this weekend. She was supposed to go to the beargrease which never worked out but has been happy to help around the kennel, especially helping with running the puppies! It has been great to have someone help me run those little squirly worms of energy!
Maliko and I are working on a little video titled "A day at Nature's Kennel" or something along those lines....It all started this past weekend when her and I took 13 dogs to go sledding at Al's pond. We had such a blast and the videos turned out great with all the dogs running after our sleds, that we decided we should film more stuff around the kennel. Maliko is editing and adding music and hopefully we can post it soon! The dogs had so much fun tearing down the hill behind our sled that we decided we should definitely go more often! Even Hedgie came with us and was running around like a 4 month old puppy!
Tasha got hooked on sledding too and went with me today with Bolt and Enzo! She must be the craziest 7 month-old pregnant lady I know! Just sits down on the sled and off she goes blasting down the hill! The Fernornater is going to be one crazy kid I tell ya!
Ryne is going to the Race to the Sky next week in Montana, which leaves Maliko, Sam, and I taking care of Boyne this weekend. It also leaves me alone in the room at the Guide House which might be problematic! What if Sam and Maliko both have an overnight tour and I am at the house all by myself again? You might think I'm being silly but I tend to freak myself out at night, especially when I am hearing noises outside and have a pit bull lying next to me that is intently staring out the window growling, and then running to the front door barking like crazy! Thanks a lot Ryne for leaving me hanging! ;-) I'll have to pull a Pat Moon and bring 10 dogs back to the cabin with me at night!
Back at the Kennel, I have found a great way to exercise Joe's puppies without them ripping into the food bags constantly! I take them out on the snow mobile and they just run behind me! Man those pups are fast! They just love to run and chase the snow mobile. I have even taken them out on a 5 mile loop and they didn't stop running once! What's more, they didn't even seem tired afterwards! It's a lot of fun though, for me and for them. Perhaps it's even going to help them a little once the time comes to harness break them.
Alrighty, time for some dog chores! I posted some pictures below of our packing day yesterday, and there are more pictures on our facebook fan page. Enjoy!
