It’s beginning to look a lot like winter here, but I think we may be in for a warm up toward the end of the week.  Bummer, as it would be great to just have the snow keep coming as there is a bit of a base right now and the ground is frozen.  The dogs are loving the cold weather and certainly sense that there may be a change in the air.  The guides now each have their “own” 16-dog teams for running tours, Rudy has his 16-dog Sunday River team, Jess and James have tour dogs and the newly harnessed puppies, and Ed is training his 32 Iditarod dogs.  It’s fun to have everyone take ownership of a section of the kennel and brag about “their” dogs.  Nate and I are headed to Great Grandma’s for Thanksgiving for a much needed vacation with Nate’s little cousins so he can run around and show off his new dance moves…the “slide” across the floor and the galloping horse.  Hilary, Nate’s nanny, has been fabulous teaching him bird sounds, how to bake cookies for tour guests, and thanks to a recent gift from Jess, how to play hockey in the living room.  Our tours are all booking up nicely for the winter, our supply of Royal Canin dog food is marvelous, and our taste of winter means that things are happening!!

A big thanks to Michele Seng and Jess for making the trek to Grand Prairie, Alberta to get our new dogs from Peter and Therese Bartlett.  The dogs are all great, very social, very hard working, and they fit right in.  Ed is trying out several of them for his Iditarod team, several will head to Maine this winter to run tours and the Can-Am with Krister, and the rest will be our super star tour dogs.  We’re really excited to have them here, it’s like getting 28 new students in class and trying to figure out who everyone is, who they get along with, and where they like to run best in the team.  The Bartletts sent us a great binder with a lot of information and detailed notes on each dog but it still takes us a while to get to know everyone.  We also have a new dog trainer in our kennel, Nate has been helping me with training the young puppies.  I only run an 8 dog team so it’s much safer to have him along with me than on one of our big 12-16 dog teams.  He loves to watch the puppies, laughs at Big Ben, and thinks it’s great to turn the key and press the start button.  Nate has his own personal assistant this year, Hilary.  Poor Ed has asked for an assistant for 15 years, and at 19 months Nate already has one!  Nate loves Hilary and she’s great at taking him in the woods on hikes, she runs dogs with us, and makes sure Nate gets his deer fed each morning.
